Best Athlete I've Competed Against
CEDAR CITY, Utah -- You know that level in any video game where you seem to get stuck and it eventually takes you 100 times to beat. That was somewhat the case against this wrestler from Vista, California named Jose Leon.
My first year the matches between him and I were not even close as he dominated meeting. I never gave up, but my skills hadn't fully developed so my heart could only take me so far. By the end of my freshman year I realized it would take a lot to take down this giant.
I started hitting camps over the summer, pushing my body to new limits. My fear was non-existent after a year of taking a beating so there nothing left but to step up to every beast I came across. During practices I tackled heavyweights improve my strength and rounded up lightweights to improve my speed.
Sophomore year, the point difference decreased but the challenged changed because now he had improved his mental game by wrestling at tournaments in the off-season in different states. So he was adapt to different style and could adjust his strategy at the drop of the hat. I could adjust as well but I needed more skills in my arsenal.
Following my Junior year I decided to compete in freestyle tournaments to get more experience in a different dynamic of wrestling. In addition I also competed in different county tournaments to better understand different wrestling styles and be able to beat them. Even though I came close a few times it still wasn't enough, he edged me out that year too.
My senior I had nothing to loose, I should've beat him early in the season but some stupid stalling call cost me the match. In the final tournament of our rivalry, the tournament to see who would go to state I let it all out. In the final minute of our final match, in a move viewed by many wrestlers as crazy, I had pulled off the inevitable and finally defeated this giant.
Some challenges in life take longer than others to accomplish but when you reach your feat its a feeling no one can ever take away from you.
