Tacos Nations

Taco'ing to Strangers CEDAR CITY, Utah --This past Tuesday, I gathered a diverse group of student with different cultural background to experience one of Cedar City's best local Mexican restaurants called Lupitas. One of the best things about SUU is the cultural diversity that gives this place a worldly energy. A place that no matter your cultural background you can find your place among caring and supportive community members. If just for a moment you feel lost, there is someone their to walk this new path with you and guide you. Its part of the reason I chose Taco Tuesday as a way to guide anyone who walking alone in the unknown to a place of the known. At first Taco Tuesday was just another reason to eat tacos like Cinco De Mayo or Quinceneras. It was a reason to meet up with friends and spend pocket change on delicious tacos. Even though Taco Tuesday has a catchy ring to it and that would be the preferred day to grab some tacos but a lot of people have busy work da

Lady Birds Soar High

Small School Victories Over Bigs CEDAR CITY, Utah -- Last night the Southern Utah University womens basketball team defeated the BYU Cougars at home inside the America First event center.  This was a big victory for the Lady Thunderbird coming off a three-game losing streak in California. It was also a moral boost and momentum shift for the team. As this shows a small school like SUU is able to compete with tops school. The significance of this also shows that the team has the tools to grab more victories and even make it to the big tournament. Winning this big in front of a home crowd gives the Ladys the confidence the need to begin a winning streak against upcoming big schools. All this goes to prove that on any given day anyone could win and anyone could  lose. It's in every team that's ever competed against big schools. The talent is there, there just needs to be heart. Give that extra ounce of breathe to get that loose ball or make the final run to get the

All the Way

CEDAR CITY, Utah -- It's not every year you have a small school like Southern Utah University produce a basketball squad that has the potential to go to the NCAA tournament. Off to one of their best starts since 2006, the SUU Thunderbirds have the depth and star power on the team this year to turn a few heads and drop some jaws. Already grabbing two big wins on the road, the team looks to build on this momentum later this week as they face the Running Rebels of UNLV. Led by strong guards like Jason Richardson, Brandon Better, and Kenton Eskridge, the T-Birds show young talent and veterans that can lead the attack this season. Supported by strong forwards like Dwayne Morgan and Jacob Calloway the team shows talent across the board and could compete with top schools on different levels. Aside from getting inside their own heads the Thunderbirds, just need to avoid simple mistakes and maintained focused. The chemistry on the team is another factor that will get them far this yea

Podcast Pros and Cons

CEDAR CITY, Utah -- The Jump podcast seems to have a reporter tone to it, which I don't find appealing to a younger audience. Some of the pros are the live quotes from the topic they speak of. They keep it current, with the Jimmy Butler situation out of Minnesota being traded to the Philadelphia Sixers. On top of that, they go in depth about the situation and provided feedback from multiple sources on the show. These sources give a different dynamic of opinions from personal expertise in the field to both male and female perspective on the topic. Furthermore they bring in former professional basketball player  Tracy McGrady to give an insight into the mentality of the of teams and dealing with trade situations. --- Pardon My Take Pros- The sarcastic humor they incorporate into the show gives off a comedic flow to the conversation which allows for the audience to go into the show with laid back mentality. They also keep it current with relevant topics like the QB 1 out of Clev

Steven's Tri-Tip Tango

Think you couldn’t possibly love steak anymore? Wait until you try it smoked. CEDAR CITY, Utah --Think of Superman and his weakness to kryptonite except in my friend Stevens case he takes shots of kryptonite and wakes up fine the next morning. The idea of fun for this man is winning. You want to meet the real most interesting man in the world, let me take you into the mind of this man Steven Robles. From the moment I met him he's never accepted losing, but has encouraged winning in his teammates through yelling in their face. Trust me, you don't want to be on this guys bad side and by bad side I mean the opposite team. He takes the term ambidextrous to a whole other level with his ability to shoot with both his left and right foot, which gets defenders frustrated because they don't know which way he's coming at them. This type of winning attitude he always carries with him through life. Even when it comes to cooking, more specifically in realm of grilling. Geor

Fourth Year is a Charm

Best Athlete I've Competed Against CEDAR CITY, Utah -- You know that level in any video game where you seem to get stuck and it eventually takes you 100 times to beat. That was somewhat the case against this wrestler from Vista, California named Jose Leon. My first year the matches between  him and I were not even close as he dominated meeting. I never gave up, but my skills hadn't fully developed so my heart could only take me so far. By the end of my freshman year I realized it would take a lot to take down this giant. I started hitting camps over the summer, pushing my body to new limits. My fear was non-existent after a year of taking a beating so there nothing left but to step up to every beast I came across. During practices I tackled heavyweights improve my strength and rounded up lightweights to improve my speed. Sophomore year, the point difference decreased but the challenged changed because now he had improved his mental game by wrestling at tournaments in

Making The W.N.B.A More Profitable

CEADR CITY, Utah -- I've always believed that everyone should get paid what they are worth. With that being said in the world of sports that logic makes sense only if the team itself is also bringing the required amount of money need to pay their athlete what they're worth. With the W.N.B.A, the problem I see is the lack of exposure they receive through marketing and social media. Now, in order to receive this kind of publicity you would need a lot of revenue and content to support it. For example this past season we had some amazing performances by players from the Seattle Storm make headline in their 2018 championship win and turns head in the sports world. Sue Birds great push in the off-season went strongly noticed at this point in her late career that it made top story on Sport Center, which got the WNBA more recognized. Another way the WNBA could get high exposure would be to establish a stronger collaboration with the NBA to use their social media impact as a platfor

More Fans in the Seats

CEDAR CITY: Utah -- Jayden Fan Name: Raz Taz Jay Given last nights performance by the Southern Utah Universitys mens basketball team its safe to say they have the talent to make a huge impact in the 2018-2019 season.  On the other hand, lets not forget the other aspect of the sports team: the fans. Believe of not, the fans play a role in the morale of the team and as well as the 12th man in distracting the opponent.  This season the athletic department should focus on getting more fans in the seat by giving the students a chance to get to know the players better. By the same token the players should be marketing themselves better and being more engaged with students activities so the students are aware of the talents on this years team and the winning potential they have this season.  Some more specifically the athletic department could promote individual players by placing posters of these players around campus giving a small description about the player and the skill

Biggest Problem in College Sports

CEDAR CITY, Utah -- Every college athletes wants to get paid and so do the coaches. Over this last year cases have come to light regarding college coaches taking back channels payments from sports apparel companies in order to secure the attendance of top tier high school athletes. Now more than ever every college is looking to get recognized and increase their attendance number in order to achieve revenue. We got Appalache State finally breaking the top 25 rankings in college football but what did they really do to get their behind closed doors. Aside from coaches getting paid, the NCAA cracks down on college students athletes trying to start their own business without using their school as a marketing launch point when instead they should be focusing on the employees hired to take care of these students and help them succeed and not having them facing criminal charges. Corruption has obliterated academic standards inn order to keep under performing athletes in at school. Some ath

The Problem With Professional Sports

CEDAR CITY, Utah -- Some get into the professionals for the fame, some for the love of the game and others strictly for the fortune. My biggest concern is how they get to these that affects the integrity of the game. I personally love players that perform day in and day out because that is their  passion and everything else in secondary. The problem with professional sports today is the use of illegal performing enhancing drugs. We have these athletes that take these drug in order to run faster, jump higher, hit harder. Players are being more focused on their personal brand and acting like they're bigger then the team itself. When players are offered a big contract it seems as their performances go down. Once they signed the big check, they seem to coast through the rest of their careers. Then of course we have the athletes who play the game till the very end with passion, influence the game off the field. These players like Lebron James for example have the mental ability and

Wake Up Thinking Tacos

Not Just Another Tuesday My Tuesday - don't start off like any another Tuesday, they usually starts off hungrier than most days. By now the meaning of Tuesday has grown to mean more than just another day, in American culture this day now belongs to tacos. Tuesday and Tacos - go together more than peanut butter and jelly and by the same concept bring people together. Of, course going hiking or playing videos with your friends is cool but have you ever feasted on a large number of tacos with buddies for a low price of just 69 cents a taco. I get up Tuesdays thinking "where will we meet today for tacos." It brings a big smile to my face as time get closer to the moment my friends and I get together to share another great taco experience. Tuesday Twist- Since this is the country of land opportunity, then why not give other cultures from the around the chance to inspire Taco Tuesday with their different variations of tacos.
